The cemeteries to be found in the Whangarei District Council Cemetery database include the following:

Maunu Forest Lawn, Kamo (Ketenikau), Onerahi, Kioreroa and Ngunguru (Cape Horn).

I would encourage anyone researching any person listed on the Roll Database who they know to be resting in any of these cemeteries and who they would like to have entered on the Cemetery Database to contact the Cemetery Manager, Whangarei District Council, Private Bag 9023, Whangarei. I know personally of some service personnel buried at Kaurihohore who do not show up on the cemetery database.

I have been told that it is unlikely that any unrecorded service personnel resting in this last group of cemeteries will be added to the database unless a specific request is received from a relative to do this. Unfortunately council just does not have the resources to undertake this task. As with the paragraph above, the Cemetery Manager should be contacted should you wish to make such a request.

There are two types of Council owned cemeteries in the Far North District. Some are operated by the Council and others are operated by Committee.

Community operated cemeteries

Broadwood, Fairburn, Herekino, Houhora, Mangonui, Mangungu, Oruaiti, Peria, Pungaere, Takahue, Waiharara and Waipapakauri.

In addition, there are a number of graveyards adjacent to churches. Customers should contact the church direct if not listed above.

Council operated cemeteries

Council manages and maintains cemeteries in the following locations:

Kaeo Cemetery, Road off Turner Street

Totara North Cemetery, Totara North School Road

Kerikeri Cemetery, Wiroa Road

Paihia Cemetery, Seaview Road

Russell Cemetery, Long Beach Road

Kawakawa Cemetery, Whitemans Road

Kaikohe Cemetery, State Highway 12

Okaihau Cemetery, Settlers Way

Rawene Cemetery, Parnell Street

Kohukohu Cemetery, Kohukohu Road

Kaitaia Cemetery, Pukepoto Road

Unfortunately the cemeteries at Mangawai, Arapohue, Tokatoka, Dargaville and Redhill which are administered by the Kaipara District Council have no online database at time of writing, so further research will be needed in respect of these. In the first instance you will want to contact the council.  The council also supports the maintenance of the Kaiwaka and Otamatea RSA cemeteries.

You will see from the spreadsheet that many other cemeteries feature from outside of the region.

It was not my intention to run a search of any of the cemetery online databases outside of the Northland region, but recently I also ran a check through the Auckland and Hamilton records, and surprisingly found the names of many servicemen and women recorded there.

As regards Auckland, the main cemeteries included: Hillsborough, Waikaraka, Otahuhu and Symonds Street; North Shore (Schnapper Rock), Birkenhead/Glenfield and Rodney (Wellsford, Warkworth, Matakana); Waikumete and Manukau Memorial Gardens (Papatoetoe), Purewa, Papakura, Waiuku and Pukekohe Cemeteries. A search was also undertaken for Hamilton, of Hamilton Park Gardens.

Note: Where there were several aliases then searches outside of Northland were dispensed with.
